Apple foresees huge demand for iPhone 8, orders 70m OLED display panels

Apple foresees that iPhone 8, the next flagship iPhone may see huge demand. This reflects in Apple placing orders of 70 million curved (OLED) panels with Samsung Electronics for use in iPhone 8 variants, as per a report by Nikkei. iPhone 8 is rumored to be launched in late 2017 and Apple has chosen Samsung as sole display panel supplier for it.

iPhone 8 is rumored to feature an edge to edge display and glass body. It may arrive in three variants as per the report by Nikkei. There may be a premium iPhone 8 (iPhone 8 Pro) with 5.2-inch OLED display panel that may get priced at higher than $1000.

Other two iPhone variants iPhone 8 and iPhone Plus are expected to feature 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches displays. But they will features LCD displays without curved screens. All three iPhone 8 variants will come with Wireless Charging and will be water-proof.

The premium iPhone 8 model may feature an Iris Scanner to allow facial recognition and unlocking of the iPhone. This feature has recently made its way to iPhone’s toughest flashing competitor Samsung Galaxy S8. This premium handset will not feature any Home button, while other two variants will come with Home buttons.

As per the report, Samsung may be planning to produce as many as 95 million OLED panels to meet any unexpected demand spike. But not all of these 70 million OLED display panels may be shipped this year to iPhone 8 buyers but may get carried over to next year.
