Android Nougat Review. Hands-on video demo of all new features & changes

Android is world’s largest used Mobile phones operating system. It is an open source operating system which is the USP of this OS. Every company modifies it according to their requirement but the core system is Android which is released by Google every year. This year Google has been working on the successor to Android Marshmallow with help of Android Beta testers. It has been named Android Nougat or Android 7.0 also known as Android N initially.

Google may be planning to release Android Nougat update for Huawei Nexus 6P and LG Nexus 5X on August 22, as per a latest report. This may hint about Android Nougat update possible roll-out on the same day by Google to Nexus devices in other regions.

Android Nougat update Video Review & Hands-on Changes / new features Demo:

Android Nougat 7.0 update Review

Positives:

  • Faster and more responsive than Android Marshmallow

It is certainly that much faster and responsive than Android Marshmallow. You can refer to our hands-on review absolve to see it in action. Even with many apps and games open in background it doesn’t break sweat. We still need to see how it works on low-end devices but we can expect it to work equally well, keeping Marshmallow’s performance in mind.

Android Nougat Multitasking

  • Many usability improvements:

There are many usability improvements in Android Nougat that really help in enhancing user experience. Features like Direct Reply and notifications grouping or bundling help in getting things done faster and in style as well. Clear all Button in Recent apps list, though you need to scroll all the way to top to access it.

  • Multitasking Improvements:

Multitasking has just become so much better with multi-Windows and other enhancements. Not only Android Nougat brings split-screen multitasking, it also makes the multitasking button even smarter. Now with Android N,  when you double tap the home button, it will now switch back to the previous app that you were using. While multiple taps will take you to the apps in the order they were opened.

  • Data Saver & Night Mode:

These two features stand out and may be really liked and desired by many. When a user enables Data Saver in Settings and the device is on a metered network, the system blocks background data usage and signals apps to use less data in the foreground wherever possible. You can set Night Mode right from Notification Center where it can be added as a quick-action icon. Toggling it on makes changes in color temp and brightness making device display more suitable for Night time reading.

  • Aesthetics & Colors:

Google has added a new zing to Android Nougat in form of colorful Keyboard themes, Emoji Unicode 9 support and new look for apps folders on home screen. Android Nougat brings a new emoji design for people emoji that moves away from generic look in favor of a more human-looking design. The update also introduces support for skin tone variations and Unicode 9 glyphs, like the bacon, selfie and face palm.

  • Improved update experience:

It is a very important improvement!! Google has introduced seamless updates, so that new Android devices built on Nougat can install system updates in the background. This means that the next time a user powers up their device, new devices can automatically and seamlessly switch into the new updated system image.

  • Security improvements:

The do not disturb mode was already available in Android Marshmallow. But with Android N, the alarms can override DND. Along with deeper DND integration , there is a new feature called call blocking which is not new but now in Android N, it has system level call blocking feature.

Android N DPI settings

  • In-Built DPI Settings & enhanced File Manager:

Android Nougat brings in-built DPI settings that allows one to scale up or down the display and other items on it based on the settings you choose. With Android N,Google has improved the File manager app. The app was first made available in Android Marshmallow but that was not powerful & let you only copy files. But now with Android N, it lets you rename, copy, create new folder etc.

Negatives:

  • Google, why you need to remove after introducing it. Google brought system-wide Dark Theme in one of the Android Nougat preview builds. And while everyone was rejoicing, removed it in the next.

  • Split-screen multitasking needs more polish. Many native apps still don’t support it. Google must be working to fix it at the time of Android N release.

Final Thoughts:

With Android Nougat update Google has focused on making Android more user-friendly. At the same time multitasking improvements make the experience enjoyable. While Google keeps on improving Android with latest iterations some of the updates really add value to experience of normal users. Android Nougat 7.0 is one of those Android versions that really matter!!

There are many other features and enhancements too (like in-built DPI settings, Night Mode, Data Saver) which are worth mentioning here. Security features like improved system-wide call blocking and seamless future updates also deserve to be mentioned.

We recommend updating to Android Nougat update as compared to Marshmallow it is certainly a good jump in overall user experience!!
