According to an exclusive report from “Reuters”, BlackBerry had seen many suitors including big names like Microsoft, Apple and Lenovo. Only Problem has been each one of them have been interested in buying parts of the company and not the entire company as a whole.
The industry watchers know how strong BlackBerry’s IPR portfolio is and both Microsoft and Apple has expressed interest in BlackBerry’s patent portfolio. Similarly talks has taken place with Google, Cisco and Lenovo in past. But, BlackBerry board feels that by splitting up company they may lose value of some assets and also the cost of break-up may create liabilities.
One of the sources said the board also took into consideration the current cost of the break-up. Winding down some of BlackBerry’s businesses would have created liabilities, including in its commitments with suppliers, and would have weighed on the monetization of the company’s intellectual property, the source said.
BlackBerry’s assets range from devices and network assets to software and patents. Some of these assets are so intertwined they could lose value in a company break-up, another source added.
